How to Stay Cool in the Heat at Night (Without Losing Sleep)
When summer nights turn sweltering, restful sleep can feel like wishful thinking. But with a few simple tricks—you can create a cool cocoon that helps you drift off naturally, no air-con required.
Freeze Your Hot Water Bottle (Yes, Really!)
Hot water bottles aren’t just for winter. Fill one with cold water and pop it in the freezer for a few hours before bed. It becomes a soothing ice pack you can tuck under your pillow or snuggle next to your feet. Cover it with one of our soft, handmade covers from our collection to stay cool without the icy shock.
It’s comfort, style, and temperature control—all in one handcrafted piece.
Create Cross-Breeze Magic
Possibly our best trick! We love to open windows at opposite ends of our home to let the night air flow freely. Use lightweight linen curtains to diffuse warm drafts while keeping bugs out. (tip; be sure to use door stops or pop something infront of each internal door as any gusts of wind cause unwanted door slamming..)
Our Jennifer stripe handmade curtains offer light weight light filtering.
Keep Bedding Breathable
Choose natural fibres like cotton or linen for sheets and pillowcases. They wick away moisture and feel light against the skin, unlike synthetics which trap heat. We also love to use our handmade linen cushions during summer months, these instantly make the space feel lighter and airier.
Stay Hydrated; The Key to Cooler Nights
Sip cool (not icy) water before bed to avoid temperature shock. Add a few mint leaves or cucumber slices for a refreshing twist. I always keep mine in a large drinking bottle to avoid dust collecting in the water and leave it handy for mid night or morning wake up hydration!
Embrace Rituals
Add calming touches to your bedroom, with a few hand picked flowers in bud vases by the bedside, such as lavender to further aid sleep, a calming pillow mist (this is our firm favourite) as well as a luxury satin eye mask to help block out light without adding discomfort or heat to your face (the one I swear by!) and of course, your Alterme home hot water bottle in its summery cover, waiting in the freezer.
We hope you’ve found this helpful and embrace some of these ideas to aid your sleep during these warmer nights!
